How it works
Risk amount = capital × risk % → quantity = risk amount ÷ (entry − stop-loss). For futures and options the quantity is rounded down to whole lots (lots = ⌊quantity ÷ lot size⌋), so your real risk never exceeds what you chose. For options, entry and stop-loss are the option’s premium, not the index level.
Using ChartMine? Put the signal’s entry and stop-loss straight in. The stop-loss on your chart is the level the trade is wrong at, so sizing from it keeps every trade’s loss the same.
Questions
How do I calculate position size?
Decide how much of your capital you will risk on the trade (for example 1%). Divide that rupee amount by the distance between your entry and your stop-loss. The result is the number of shares; for F&O, divide by the lot size and round down to whole lots.
How much should I risk per trade?
Many traders risk 0.5% to 2% of their capital on a single trade, so that a run of losses does not do serious damage. This calculator lets you test different levels; it does not tell you what is right for you.
Why is my F&O quantity zero lots?
If even one lot would lose more than your chosen risk at the stop-loss, the calculator rounds down to zero. Widen your risk, tighten the stop-loss, or trade a smaller instrument.
Does this include brokerage and taxes?
No. Charges such as brokerage, STT, exchange fees and GST add to the real cost and risk, so keep a small buffer.
A planning tool, not investment advice. Prices can gap through a stop-loss, so real losses can be larger. Brokerage, taxes and margin requirements are not included.
